The volume collects and illustrates the works carried out in the 2005-2006 academic year by students of the architectural design course as part of the specialist degree course in civil engineering at the Engineering Faculty of the University of Salerno. The course was developed over a semester according to a didactic set-up aimed at combining the moment of critical and theoretical study with that more properly related to the design exercise. The chosen theme was the recovery and re-functionalization of the ancient Château Barrière, in the city of Périgueux, the ancient Roman-Gallic site of Veruna, in southern France. The project theme was therefore the pretext to explore the more general topic of the relationship between ancient and new in architecture, exploring the different compositional and linguistic possibilities offered by a program aimed at reconstituting the identity of a ruined monument transforming it into a building “Alive”, able to accommodate different functions inside and in the area immediately adjacent to it.
